Your Morocco trip starts in Fes, an important city. After checking into your hotel (riad), you’ll take a guided tour of Fes el-Bali, the old city, which is very large and old (a UNESCO site). You’ll see narrow streets, old schools (madrasas), the Chouara Tanneries (where leather is made), and Al Quaraouiyine University (a very old university). End the day with a Moroccan dinner in the old city.
Today, you’ll learn about Morocco’s history. First, visit Volubilis to see old Roman ruins. Next, go to Meknes, an old royal city, to see the big Bab Mansour gate and old storehouses. After lunch, travel to Rabat, the capital. Visit Hassan Tower and the pretty blue-and-white Kasbah of the Udayas by the sea. In the evening, explore Rabat.
Travel along the coast, first to Casablanca. Visit the large Hassan II Mosque by the ocean (you can go inside). See the city’s buildings and seaside area. Then, drive inland to Marrakech. At night, visit the lively Jemaa el-Fnaa square with its performers and food. Stay in a hotel (riad) in the old city.
Drive from Marrakech over the High Atlas Mountains, crossing the Tizi n’Tichka pass. Visit Ait Ben Haddou, a famous old clay village seen in movies (UNESCO site). Continue to Ouarzazate, known for movies, and maybe visit the film studios. End the day in Dades Valley, known for its cool rock shapes called “Monkey Fingers.” Stay in a hotel there.
Drive through pretty valleys to Todra Gorge, a huge canyon with high cliffs where you can walk. Then, drive southeast towards the desert. Reach Merzouga in the late afternoon. Ride camels at sunset into the Erg Chebbi sand dunes. Stay in a desert camp with comfy tents, dinner, and Berber music under the stars.
Wake up early for a desert sunrise. You might also try sandboarding. Go to Rissani to see its traditional market (especially good on market days). Drive through the beautiful Draa Valley, full of palm trees and old villages. Stop in Agdez before returning to Ouarzazate for the night.
Today, explore southern Morocco. Drive through the Anti-Atlas mountains to Taroudant, a nice walled town with markets. Continue to Tafraoute, a town among big pink rocks, known for almond trees and colorful painted rocks. Stay in a guesthouse with mountain views and experience local life.
In the morning, visit Paradise Valley, a place with natural pools and waterfalls where you can swim. Then, go to Agadir, a beach resort town. Enjoy the beach, walk by the sea, and maybe have seafood for dinner. This is a relaxing stop by the coast.
Your trip ends with a drive along the coast to Essaouira, a breezy port town with old walls, art, and good seafood. Walk along the old walls, see the busy harbor, and look at local wood crafts. After lunch, drive to Marrakech. You might have time for last-minute shopping or a traditional bath (hammam) before you leave, completing your 9-day trip seeing Morocco’s different places and culture.
